To the parsonage born, to the university bred, he began on this campus the career which has left its indelible marks upon Duke and Vanderbilt and upon higher education here and abroad. For that, this University, like many others, honors him and on this Anniversary occasion gives special recognition to his part in creating here a climate of academic excellence during the formative years of this institution.
